Solid Steel Welded Frame
The 2023 Colex Sharpcut SX1732 is an industrial CNC flatbed cutting and routing machine designed to cut foam, plastics, cardboard, rubber-like flexible materials, fabrics, wood, and certain aluminum products.
Its manufacturer's published maximum cutting thickness is 2.5 inches (63.5 mm). However, that does not mean it can cut every material at that thickness. Actual capacity depends on material hardness, tooling, and spindle configuration.
1. Machine specifications
2. Materials and approximate cutting thicknesses
The following are practical screening estimates, not manufacturer-certified maximums for each material. Colex publishes a 2.5-inch overall machine limit, but does not publish a comprehensive material-by-material thickness rating.

Acrylic / Plexiglas
1/16"–1/2"
Router
PETG / styrene
0.5–6 mm
Knife or router
Aluminum composite (ACM/Dibond)
2–6 mm
Router
Thin aluminum sheet
Approximately 0.5–2 mm

Rotary or drag knife
Important: The upper ends of these ranges are conditional, not guaranteed. Thick foam needs a sufficiently long oscillating blade, while thick wood and plastics require an appropriately powered router and suitable cutting passes.
The manufacturer explicitly lists foam board, Gatorfoam, styrene, PVC, aluminum, wood/MDF, acrylic, Coroplast, aluminum composite, paperboard, canvas, vinyl and textiles among supported materials.
3. Cutting tools and their applications
Oscillating Tool | Knife-Cutting | Colex Sharpcut Flatbed Cutter
Oscillating knife
Best for polyethylene foam, EVA foam, packaging inserts, corrugated cardboard, honeycomb panels and some rubber sheets. The blade moves rapidly up and down to cut without generating significant heat.
CNC router
Used for acrylic, rigid PVC, wood, MDF, aluminum composite panels and limited thin aluminum applications. It cuts by removing material with a rotating bit.
Colex SharpCut SXC Flatbed Cutter Series
| GPI Supplies
Creasing wheel / drag knife / rotary knife
Used for folding cartons, paperboard, vinyl, flexible signs, textiles and fabric, depending on installed accessories.
4. Can it cut 1-inch toolbox drawer foam?
Yes, potentially. This machine is a much more suitable option than a fiber laser for producing customized foam toolbox organizers.
With the correct oscillating knife and suitable blade length, it may cut 1-inch polyethylene or EVA toolbox foam, including shaped pockets for hand tools.
One important limitation: Colex's September 2023 blade catalog identifies oscillating blades with different cutting lengths, including shorter blades intended for material up to approximately 7/8 inch. You need to verify that the used machine includes a blade suitable for a full 1-inch cut.
The SX1732 is especially attractive for foam inserts, packaging, signage, plastic panels and light CNC routing, but should not be treated as a general-purpose metal cutting machine.
The Colex Sharpcut Flatbed Cutter is an easy-to-use cutting solution with an intuitive software platform at its core. Though competitively positioned, it is not to be underestimated for its versatility, throughput, and its ability to help you unlock the full potential of your flatbed or roll-to-roll printer. The Colex Sharpcut Finishing System features an automated and easy-to-use workflow solution for nesting and optimizing media.
Now you can:
Reduce costs and turnaround time on short-run applications
Turn outsourced jobs into in-house revenue opportunities
Decrease labor costs
Reduce waste and increase profits
For Digital Production of
Graphics
2-dimensional signs, decals, banners, outdoor exhibits, and intricate lettering can all be cut, trimmed, or routed within minutes.
